I get alot of questions about the difference between handmade soap and store bought, so here is the answer.
Next time you go to your favorite store, talk a walk down the "soap aisle", take a minute to read the packaging and the ingredients, you will notice that the vast majority of them do not say soap, they are called beauty bars, or body bars, but not soap. This is because this bars legally cant claim to be soap because they aren't; they're detergents. The manufactures have taking all the good stuff out of them and replaced it with fillers, synthetic lathering agents and harsh chemicals, lets not forget...your skin is the largest organ in your body, it takes 30 seconds for your skin to absorb what you put on it, and guess where it all goes, into our blood stream.
Manufactures remove the most valuable ingredient in soap, which is glycerin, glycerin is produced during the saponification (soap-making) process, it is a natural humectant, therefore it is highly valuable in the beauty industry, this leaves your bar with very little goodness for your skin.
Have you ever wondered why your skin feels tight and itchy after you take a shower? Especially in the winter months? Yes, you get out of the shower and now you feel the need to slather on the lotions in order to give back your skin what that "soap bar" took away. This is because the "store bought soap" you purchased is full if skin stripping ingredients and synthetics.
Always remember that your skin is porous and very absorbent. natural handmade soap are extremely high quality, and yes..Its REAL soap! Yes, these bars generally cost a more than the cheap detergent bars you can pick up at Wal-mart, but here the difference, these soaps are good for your skin, made with quality ingredients and no artificial chemicals. The lather you get is natural, it has all the natural glycerin it created in it, therefor your skin will benefit from it.
Lets talk a little about the ingredients;
Cold process soap is made using a combination of oils and lye. Sounds a little scary, but all the caustic qualities of the lye is removes during saponification. When lye interacts with the oils, your magical and valuable ingredient is created...glycerin!
So, to sum it all up, the BEST soap for your skin is handmade, once you have tried one of these lathery little treasure you will never want to go back to those detergent cheap little bars you can pick up at any store.
Are you willing to start using real soap now that you know the difference? I hope you do!
